Philosophy
Dr. Montessori was an Italian physician and educator. Born in 1870, she was the first woman to receive a medical degree at the University of Rome. She developed her method of pre-school education over a forty-year period during which she observed children directly and worked with them personally. Dr. Montessori devoted her life to the education of children and is honored and respected throughout the world. The Montessori Method has been used successfully with children all over the world. It is concerned with the development of each child as an individual. The Montessori Method is based on the belief that:
The Montessori child is free to learn because he/she has acquired from experience with both physical and mental order, the inner discipline that frees him/her. The child becomes aware not only of the freedom, but the corresponding responsibility to him/herself and others. The aim is to develop the whole child. Intellectual, physical and social growth are of equal value. The teacher strives to encourage and guide the child and to help realize a happy, balanced, aware personality that will enhance his/her life as an adult.
